Nikhat Zareen Sets Her Sights on Olympic Redemption After World Boxing Cup Gold

Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen reflects on her World Boxing Cup Finals gold, overcoming the disappointment of the Paris Olympics, and her unwavering hunger for an Olympic medal. The 29-year-old boxer speaks about resilience, future plans, and her mindset at the elite level.

At just 29, Nikhat Zareen has already built a résumé most boxers only dream of. A two-time world champion and now a gold medallist at the World Boxing Cup Finals, the Indian boxer speaks with the clarity of someone who has tasted both triumph and disappointment — and emerged sharper from both.

Fresh off her gold medal win, Zareen reflected on the emotional weight of the achievement, describing it as a moment of relief after a challenging period in her career. The victory marked the end of a medal drought and reaffirmed her standing among the elite in international boxing. For Zareen, however, the success is not an endpoint but a reaffirmation of her deeper ambition — an Olympic medal.

The Paris Olympics proved to be a testing chapter. Competing in the 50kg category, Zareen exited in the pre-quarterfinals after a loss to Wu Yu, who went on to win gold. While the result was disappointing, she has chosen not to dwell on it. Instead, she views the experience through a lens shaped by resilience and perspective. She emphasised that she had prepared thoroughly for Paris and gave everything she had in the ring, accepting that not every outcome is within an athlete’s control.

Zareen’s approach to setbacks has been central to her ability to bounce back repeatedly at the highest level. Her mindset, she says, is rooted in consistent hard work and focusing on performance rather than results. That philosophy has helped her reset quickly, channeling frustration into preparation and motivation rather than self-doubt.

Looking ahead, Zareen is clear about both her immediate and long-term plans. The hunger for an Olympic medal remains undiminished, and she describes it as something deeply ingrained in her. Her recent success has only strengthened her belief that she is on the right path, even if the journey includes unexpected detours.

Interestingly, despite her high-profile career, Zareen prefers to keep her boxing life separate from her family. She rarely discusses the details of her training or competitions with them, a personal boundary that helps her manage pressure and remain mentally focused.
